Sea Lion Experience in La Paz

Espiritu Santo Island is Located about 25 miles from La Paz, and 45 minutes boat ride
The island is a Natural Protected Area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.

The trip itself, can be an exciting photo safari, in it you will find an impressive scenic beauty; The contrast between the desert and the sea and its volcanic rock formations will captivate you, as well as the large amount of flora and fauna that inhabits the place. Winter and spring visitors have a chance of sighting Gray whales or Humpbacks whales. Dolphins are always a thrill to see and sometimes they will even bow ride the boat for a distance.

Sea lions at this colony are not aggressive, the youngsters seem to enjoy performing acrobatics for the visitors and will swim circles around you and each other impressing you with their sleek maneuverability. Underwater the face of the sea lion is entirely different than from when they are seen out of their environment. The huge eyes, great light receptacles for hunting fish at depths and in the dark, become even softer and more inviting. Even if you don’t desire to get in the water with these large marine mammals the trip can be very entertaining.

This day trip is definitely a nature lover treat, great for photographers and highly recommended for the whole family! Come and experience it with us!

California sea lions are known for their intelligence, playfulness, and noisy barking. Their color ranges from chocolate brown in males to a lighter, golden brown in females. Males reach 850 pounds (390 kg) and seven feet (2.1 m) in length.

Females grow to 220 pounds (110 kg) and up to six feet (1.8 m) in length. They have a "dog-like" face, and at around five years of age, males develop a bony bump on top of their skull called a sagittal crest. The top of a male's head often gets lighter in color with age. These members of the Otary or walking seal family have external ear flaps and large flippers that they use to "walk" on land.

Most pups are born in June or July and weigh 13 to 20 pounds (6 to 9 kg). They nurse for at least five to six months and sometimes over a year. Mothers recognize pups on crowded rookeries through smell and vocalizations. Pups also learn to recognize the smell and vocalizations of their mothers. Breeding takes place a few weeks after birth. Males patrol territories and bark almost continuously during the breeding season. Reason why between this months we are not allow to jump in the water with them.
